Back around 1980 Jim McGuirk wanted to create more business around the lunch hour. Over the years the Dairy Queen had sold various food items, but at that time it was only selling ice cream products. Jim did not want to get into the burger business because the market was saturated and the complication and capital investment was significant. Jim decided hotdogs would be a good idea because not only was it an iconic food, but in reality there was very little competition.
However, Jim wasn't just going to sell any old hotdog and price it at the going rate. Jim decided he would find the best quality hotdog on the market and sell it for as little as possible. Jim gathered up about ten different hotdogs, set up a roller grill at the Dairy Queen and gave the hotdogs away. The only price was the customer had to say which one they liked best. The winner ended up being a Kahn's All Beef hotdog. Once the hotdog was decided, Jim chose to sell the hotdog for 48 cents, about the cost of a fully dressed hotdog (Mustard, Ketchup, Onions & Relish).
Today, almost 30 years later, that same hotdog is only 99 cents. The hotdogs are such a hit that the Dairy Queen sells over 135,000 annually. Any price benefit the Dairy Queen gets from the number of hotdogs it sells is passed along to the customer as a way of showing our appreciation.
Tuesdays: 2 of our famous all beef hot dogs and a medium shake for only $4.09. We always win best hot dog contests because we only use the very best all beef hot dogs. And we make our hand spun shakes and malts the old fashioned way. Note: chili and cheese just a little extra.
